New house guests
Well, she at least returned. She's (the one with the brown head, the male has the green) been wandering around the neighborhood with her beau in tow the last few weeks. But sometime between Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon, she settled in for the duration. Tucked right in front of our house, only about 20 feet from our front door and driveway, yet well hidden from the street, she started a nest...
I took these shot when she took off after being spooked by the mail being delivered. The nest is just outside of a small office off our kitchen.
Wikipedia has an entry on Mallards here.
Looks like they will be with us for the next month if all goes well. There's almost no way to keep from disturbing her, but hopefully we can minimize any problems.
I should have known something was up...Storm saw her wandering around the front yard Wednesday morning, and was worried that the male was no where to be seen. According to Wikipedia, the couple stays together till she lays her eggs then they each go their own way. I wonder? I think I'll take a stop at the library to get a little more definitive info. I did notice that Wednesday afternoon, shortly after getting spooked and taking off (when I accidentally discovered the nest), when she returned the male came with her and waited till she was snug on the nest again till he took off.
Storm wonders if these are "our" mallards returning year after year, or another couple that, like many couples before them, love to hang out here (this is not the first Mallard nest Storm has had here).
Curious. I hope this can work without Ms. Mallard freaking out over all the humans going back and forth. The dogs mainly stay in the backyard so that shouldn't be a problem.
