Bird Song

A few years ago, Chicago got hit by the wave of West Nile Virus that was sweeping through the country.

One morning I was reading one of the local papers when a writer mentioned the lack of bird song...I was amazed that I hadn't "heard" the silence, the missing of that noise was significant, but it disappeared without me even noticing.

But once I had noticed it became a palpalable lack.

But...the birdsong is back. We still don't have any blackbirds, the ones most susceptible to wnv, but each spring morning here has been filled with the sound of singing and chirping.

And it is a pleasure to hear it.

There's a lesson in there somewhere...

I actually saw a blackbird in our backyard a few days ago. The first in years. As annoying as they were sometimes, it is sad to me that they are (primarily) gone.

Birds have been singing a lot lately. Well, that and the geese!
